Florida's Skilled Labor Crisis - Alan's Experience

Alan Zirkelbach, president of Manatee County-based Zirkelbach Construction, has promoted the technical education issue in his community for more than a decade. Alan has found that many business leaders shared his frustration with the State’s dwindling skilled technical labor pool, and its impact on the economy. Additionally, Alan has met with many business, community and political leaders that share his concern that this issue represents a looming economic crisis for Florida.

Alan has reached out to the community and business leaders in neighboring counties along Florida’s Gulf Coast -- sponsoring luncheons, meeting with school superintendents, one-on-one meetings with business leaders -- in an effort to raise awareness of this issue and support for legislation to address it.

This year, Alan has a leadership role in shaping and implementing the statewide effort to increase funding for Florida’s Technical Education Centers, which he believes is the answer to the looming crisis. His focus will be on working with the business, community and political leaders, as well as the school superintendents, in 10 counties. Additionally, it is worth noting that Alan has long been a supporter of technical education, and was once an instructor at Manatee Technical Institute in the mid-1980s.
